When you’re an employee, a student and a Mom or Dad, it can feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day.

While it’s easy to get overwhelmed, there’s a lot you can do to maximize your productivity. Try out these 9 essential productivity hacks and you’ll get more done without putting in extra time.

1. Unplug

These days you can be online through your computer, your phone or even your wristwatch. This can lead to a lot of distractions like browsing social media sites or reading non-work related news and articles.

To get more done, disconnect from the internet. Or, if you need an internet connection to work, try an app like SelfControl. SelfControl and other similar apps allow you to block yourself from accessing certain websites for a certain amount of time. If you just can’t resist refreshing your newsfeed for the 5th time today, then this productivity hack is for you.

2. Tidy Up

Having a clean work area will help you focus on the work at hand. To keep cleaning from becoming a distraction from the work you’re actually setting out to do, set a specific amount of time aside. Try tidying for ten minutes, then getting to work.

3. Schedule Tasks

Making a to-do list is a great start, but if you want to really get things done you need to schedule your tasks. If you give yourself a set amount of time to do something you’re more likely to complete it—and quickly.

4. Do Unpleasant Tasks First

That one task that you’re dreading? Do it first. If you get the least pleasant tasks out of the way, then the rest of your to-do list feels much more manageable.

5. Take A Break

When you have a lot to get done, taking a quick break can actually help you refocus. Every hour, get up and take a five minute break. This is especially important if you’re working on a screen to avoid eye strain.

6. Break Down Complex Projects

When you have a big project in front of you, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and procrastinate.

Break up complex projects into smaller tasks. That way you’ll be motivated to complete the smaller tasks to check them off your list and you’ll get more done.

7. Don’t Multitask

Research shows that multitasking actually decreases productivity. Choose one task to focus on at a time and see it through to completion.

8. Leave Work At The Office (Or Wherever You Work)

Splitting your focus is never a good idea, especially when it comes to work and family life. Set aside periods of time to spend time with your family and loved ones and don’t let work or school stress seep in. When you are at work, devote all of your attention to the tasks at hand.

9. Say No

Sometimes the trick to getting more done is to just say no to less important requests. You have to prioritize not just your work tasks, but also school and family time.
