Questions To Ask Yourself Before Starting a Competency Based Degree

Competency based education, or CBE, is an education model where the emphasis is on what you know, rather than how much time you spend in class. CBE programs like Personalized Learning test your understanding of identified core competencies and give you credit based on your ability to prove your knowledge. These types of programs are perfect for the working adult who has a wealth of real-world experience in their field, but never earned their degree.

So, is a CBE program like Personalized Learning right for you? That depends. Ask yourself these questions to find out.

Am I a self-motivated worker?

In Personalized Learning and other CBE programs you are left to work at your own pace. This is great if you work full time and want the flexibility to complete your schoolwork where and when you like. However, if you aren’t self-motivated you probably won’t be successful in a CBE program. There are no deadlines so you need to ensure that you complete your work in the timeline that you choose.

Do I have real-world experience in this field?

If you already have some real-world experience in your degree field it will increase your success in CBE. In Personalized Learning, you take a pretest at the beginning of each lesson. If you score high enough, then you get to skip that lesson. The more pretests you excel in, the faster you’ll move through the degree material and graduate.

Do I prefer an individualized experience?

CBE is a very individualized education model. You won’t have classmates or discussions, so you need to be prepared for that. However, you’re not alone either. Personalized Learning assigns you a faculty mentor to help guide you through your degree, answer questions and advise you on school and career issues.

Am I tech-savvy?

This is a big one. Personalized Learning is 100% online. While the learning platform doesn’t take a tech expert to navigate, it is very important that you are comfortable on a computer.
